Meet Reed Hutton

2024 Recipient of The Marjorie Alexander Memorial Award

Reed has been involved in theatrical arts, both on stage and back stage, since the age of five! Last year he performed in the BTG’s production of “Calendar Girls” and was an ASM for both “Love and Avarice” (2022) and “A Christmas Story” (2019).

In addition, Reed has been involved in productions with the Brockville Operatic Society (BOS) and St. Mary High School. He performed in the 2023 and 2024 St. Mary High School productions, “Freaky Friday” and “Newsies” respectively, in the latter of which played the role of Davey.

Reed has a great attitude and energy and feedback from cast/crew is always positive. Beyond the stage, he is a thoughtful and enthusiastic supporter of local community theatre productions and never hesitates to offer his direct contributions, for example helping to build a set or create props.

Reed is pursuing his post secondary education at Nipissing University. He hopes to become a drama teacher, just like his mom, Stephanie Hutton, who has also been an active member of the Brockville Theatre Guild.

Reed’s contributions to community theatre were also acknowledged at the recent EODL One Act Festival in Perth where he was presented with the 2024 EODL Scholarship.

Congratulations Reed on receiving these two awards!

  • Stan was an artist and musician but above all an actor. Although he designed sets, did make-up, served on the board, directed and painted scenery, he was happiest and was at his best when on stage. Stan's earliest role with the Brockville Theatre Guild was in 1967. He was seen on stage almost every year after that! He won a Best Actor award with the Eastern Ontario Drama League for his portrayal of Alistair Spenlow in Move Over Mrs. Markham. Stan also had many memorable performances with the Brockville Operatic Society including Boris Adzinidzinadze in CanCan, Fagin in Oliver and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

Stan was inducted into the Brockville and Area Music and Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2015.

After his untimely death in 1986, the Brockville Theatre Guild established a bursary in his memory for budding high school thespians to use in the pursuit of their dreams.

The Stan Pearce Student Scholarship Award is given to a student(s) who is pursuing a post-secondary program in acting.

  • Jack Carroll, a pioneer in the community theatre movement in Canada, began his quest to establish a theatre group for all Brockvillians in 1933. Over the initial years of the Theatre Guild (then the St. Peter’s Players), Dr. Carroll assumed the responsibilities of director, stage manager, actor and producer for a number of one-act and full length productions which were performed both locally and at regional festivals. He directed the local production of “Our Town” which travelled to Calgary in the 1950’s to compete at the all-Canadian Dominion Drama Festival. After 85 years, Dr. Carroll’s dream of a theatre group in Brockville continues to thrive.

Dr. Jack Carroll was inducted into the Brockville and Area Music and Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Dr. Jack Carroll Student Scholarship Award is given to a student(s) who is pursuing a post-secondary program in some area of the non-performing aspect of theatrical training, i.e., directing, writing, technical theatre, etc.

  • The Brockville Theatre Guild created the Marjorie Alexander Memorial Award in memory of Marjorie to recognize young people’s contributions to local community theatre. Marjorie’s passed away in 2013 at the age of 90.

From her début with the Brockville Theatre Guild in “Our Town” and over 5 decades, Marjorie appeared in dozens of major and minor productions, worked on costumes, make-up, props, publicity, set décor and set painting. She narrated, decorated and campaigned! She won three Best Actress Awards in the Eastern Ontario Drama League festivals and was made a Life Member of the Brockville Theatre Guild in 1982. In 2008 Marjorie was inducted into the Brockville and Area Music and Performing Arts Hall of Fame.

The Marjorie Alexander Memorial Award is given to a student(s) who is pursuing studies at a post-secondary institution in any program.
